Odisha Auto-driver Denies Police ‘Hafta’; Passengers Thrashed

Odisha police thrushes passengers as auto-driver denies to give 'extortion money' Bhadrak: Tension prevailed in Basudebpur of the district as locals staged a road blockade on Wednesday demanding action against the police officials who attacked some auto-passengers after driver of the three-wheeler refused to pay ‘hafta’ or  extortion money.

According to reports, one Sudhansu Sekhar Jena was traveling in an auto from Bhadrak Railway Station to Basudebpur along with two others. On their way, some cops, who were engaged in night patrolling, intercepted them and asked the ‘extortion money’ from the auto driver. But, when the auto driver refused to pay, the police officials beat Sekhar and two others.

Sekhar was seriously injured in the attack, and he has been admitted to the Basudebpur Community Health Centre. He is said to be critical, sources said.

When the news of excessive action of the police spreads, the irate locals of Basudebpur staged a road blockade in front of the police station by burning tyre. They demanded stringent action against the police personnel.

On being informed, the SDPO arrived the spot for further investigation.
