Nor’wester rain affects normal life in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Normal life in several parts of the state including the Twin Cities (Cuttack and Bhubaneswar) was affected due to Nor’wester rain accompanied with thunderstorm since this morning.

Many people were seen stranded at the railway station and different bus stoppages including Baramunda bus stand here. People those who suffered most were the office-goers and daily commuters.

The state capital city witnessed severe waterlogging at different places. However, the waterlogging situation was worst in Acharya Vihar, Jayadev Vihar and Nayapalli where water was flowing above knee on the road. Many pedestrians and commuters were stranded due to the waterlogging.

Rail services on Bhadrak-Bhubaneswar-Puri route were also affected after snapping of wires and signals stopped functioning due to Nor’wester rains.

Speaking about the rainfall in the Twin Cities of the state, IMD Bhubaneswar Director, Sarat Chandra Sahu said, “The cloud mark has already travelled through Balasore, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar and is now moving towards south due to which Bhubaneswar and Cuttack have been witnessing heavy rains since morning”.

“The cloud mark is likely to move towards Puri now and then to the Bay of Bengal,” he added.

Thunderstorm alert issued for 15 districts

The city-based Regional Meteorological Department had issued a thunderstorm warning for 15 districts of the state till 11.30 AM.

Dhenkanal, Angul, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Sundergarh and Jharsuguda were the 15 districts where the weatherman had issued thunderstorm warning today.

People of these districts were asked to remain alert as thunderstorm accompanied with hail and gusty surface wind reaching a speed of 50 to 60 kmph was forecasted to occur in the above districts.
