Nipah Virus: Odisha govt takes precautionary measures

Bhubaneswar: Odisha government has taken precautionary measures to tackle deadly Nipah Virus (NiV) that claimed 11 lives so far in Kerala.

The Health Department of the state government has written letters to the five state-run medical colleges and hospitals and 30 District Headquarters Hospitals (DHHs) asking them to keep close watch on the virus and remain alert to deal with the situation if takes place here in the state.

The people have been advised not to take any fruits that are half-eaten by any birds.

Although, no Nipah virus related incident has been reported yet in Odisha, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, has already set up an isolated ward to admit patients afflicted with the virus.

There is no vaccine for either humans or animals infected by the Nipah virus, which is an airborne infection that can affect persons, who come in direct contact with infected animals or humans.

Headache, dizziness, nausea, drowsiness, fever (lasts up-to four to five days) and confusion are some of the common signs and symptoms of the deadly disease.
