Naveen invited to symposium on Paika Rebellion

Naveen PatnaikNew Delhi: A group of Odia intellectuals under the banner of “The Intellects” met the Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik here on Friday and invited him to attend the national history symposium on Paika Rebellion of 1817, scheduled to be held in September 2017.

The delegation, led by Rajya Sabha MP AV Swamy, informed the Chief Minister that the symposium would establish the historical facts regarding the “Paika Rebellion of 1817″ against the British rule in Odisha.

Eminent historians, scholars and researchers from different parts of the country would be invited to throw more light on the 19th century rebellion.

“A digital presentation on Paika Rebellion will be screened on the occasion to promote the historical event in the digital world,” said the Chairman of ‘The Intellects: Debendra Raout , while talking to Kalinga TV. “A colourful exhibition on weapons, habits, practices and socio- cultural life of the great Paikas will also be displayed during the symposium,” he said.

On July 20, President of India Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the national-level function to commemorate the 200th year of the Paika Rebellion in New Delhi.

On July 19, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh urging him to declare the Paika Rebellion of 1817 as the First war of Indian Independence.

Earlier on May 13, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had released the logo of the upcoming National History Symposium on Paaika Rebellion in New Delhi.

Paika Bidroha, under the leadership of Buxi Jagabandhu, was an armed rebellion against the British East India Company’s rule in Odisha in 1817.
