Bhubaneswar: The Nandankanan Zoological Park authorities brought two exotic primate species on Sunday.
The Nandankanan officials brought a pair of Red Hand Tamarin and a pair of Black tufted Marmoset from Madurai in Tamil Nadu. The primate species have been procured directly and not through any exchange programme.
The zoo authorities have decided to put them in enclosure 55 (B) of Nandankanan. The news of their arrival in the zoo has made the wildlife and animal lovers happy as the animals have been brought to the Nandankanan Zoological Park for the first time. It had earlier other varieties of Tamarin and Marmoset species.
The red-handed tamarin also known as the golden-handed tamarin or Midas tamarin, is a New World Monkey named for the contrasting reddish-orange hair on its feet and hands. It is native to north of the Amazon River in Brazil, Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname and possibly Venezuela.
The black-tufted marmoset is a species that lives primarily in the Neo-tropical gallery forests of the Brazilian Central Plateau. This marmoset typically resides in rain forests, living an arboreal life high in the trees, but below the canopy. They are only rarely spotted near the ground.
