Bhubaneswar: Nandankanan Zoological Park celebrated International Tiger Day here on Saturday.
Nandankanan authorities celebrated the day by conducting awareness programmes on conservation of the king of the jungles. Quiz and drawing competitions on conservation of the big cat were also held among school students and winners were given prizes on the occasion.
“We held an awareness programme for conserving the tigers on the occasion of the International Tiger Day. We involved school children in the programme. Now our aim is to increase the tiger population by breeding. This will help us to leave the tigers in the forests where the big cat population has come down. This will also attract more tourists,” said Jayant Kumar Das, Deputy Director of Nandankanan.
As of now, Nandankanan, famous for white tigers, has 26 tigers, the highest in India. Out of these 26, 12 are male while 14 are female.
Of the total number, there are nine white tigers, two black tigers while the rest are of general colour.
July 29 was declared as International Tiger Day at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit held in 2010.
