Mukesh Ambani launches ‘Free’ Jio Phone

JIO PHONEMumbai: India’s telecom tycoon and Chairman of Reliance industries Ltd (RIL) Mukesh Ambani on Friday announced the launch of its much talked about 4G feature phone, named “Jio Phone”, at the 40th annual general meeting (AGM) of RIL here.

The RIL Chairman Ambani said “The Jio phone would be available for an effective price Rs 0 (Zero)”.

The JioPhone will be available for free but buyers will have to deposit a fee of Rs 1500, which will be refunded after three years. This means the phone will be available free of cost

Pre-booking for the smart phone will start from 24 August. It will have various interesting features such as 2.4-inch display, SD card slot for memory expansion, Torch light, option for digital payment via NFC etc.

“There are 78 crore mobile phones in India,” Ambani stated. “However, in this 78 crore, there are more than 50 crore feature phone users, who have been left out. They can neither afford the cheapest LTE smartphone, nor the exorbitant cost of data.”

The phone was introduced by Akash and Isha Ambani, revealing the phones for support voice commands, along with standard feature phone functionality.

The JioPhone will come with a couple of data packs. Users can either pay Rs. 153 per month, for which they will get free voice and SMS, and unlimited data, along with Jio apps, or they can pay Rs. 309 per month, to get all this, plus the support for mirroring your screen on a TV, via a cable that can even be plugged into CRT TVs.
