Puri: Forest officials recovered carcasses of migratory birds at Mituani village under Brahmagiri Forest Range in the district here on Monday.

Acting on a tip off, forest officials conducted a raid and recovered three dead migratory birds from a forest area near the village. They were on their way to provide security to the winged guests in the area.

The poachers had reportedly laid traps and put poison in the area to kill the birds. The forest officials could not catch the bird killers as they outnumbered the former and fled the spot.

An investigation by the forest officials has been initiated into the matter. The dead birds have been kept in the forest office and will be buried after postmortem, informed sources.

The officials informed that migratory birds arrive in the area in winter season, while poachers hunt them to consume bird-meat.

The incident has saddened the bird lovers in the area as the annual census of the foreign birds, which was conducted recently, had already revealed a drop in number of the winged visitors.
