Nuapada: Red fear loomed large in Boden block of the district after suspected members of CPI (Maoist) group killed a former sarpanch over his alleged involvement in graft and anti-Maoist campaign last night.

The deceased has been identified as former Bhainsadani sarpanch Hirasingh Majhi.

A group of heavily armed rebels captured Majhi near Sahajpani village in the night, while he was on his way to neighbouring Patadara village in some work. After reprimanding him over his involvement in large scale irregularity in various developmental projects in the village in the capacity of a sarpanch, the Maoists thrashed him brutally. Later they gunned Majhi down after holding him responsible for running an anti-Maoist agenda in the area.

Before leaving the spot, the red rebels left a number of posters near the body justifying the killing.

Majhi remained on the target of the Maoists for long and they kept issuing warning to him over last couple of months, said police.

Combing operation has been intensified in the area following the incident.
