Keonjhar: Red fear loomed large in Keonjhar district again on last night after Maoists issued a letter to the authorities of a steel plant demanding extortion money of Rs 3 cr to run business.

A group of eight uniformed cadres of outlawed CPI (Maoist) group reached the premises of Ardent Steel Limited (ASL) plant located in Phuljhar village at around 1.30 AM. While four of them remained on guard at the entrance, others barged into the plant premises and handed over a letter to the security personnel deployed on duty.

The letters issued in the name of the Western Sub Zonal Committee of the outfit accused the plant authorities of polluting the environment of the area and acting against the interest of the farmers. Levying a sum of Rs 3 cr for the purpose to be paid within three days, the red rebels warned them against taking the matter to police to avoid an action by the outfit.

Police are examining the CCTV footage of the plant and has intensified combing in and around the area.
