Maoist carrying Rs 1 lakh reward surrenders in Malkangiri

Malkangiri: An armed cadre Maoist surrendered before Malkangiri Police after getting disillusioned over the activities of the top leaders here on Saturday.

The surrendered Maoist has been identified as Digambar Poddar. Digambar was active as a Zonal Committee Area Member of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) group and was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head.

Digambar surrendered before Malkangiri SP Jagamohan Meena amidst tight security arrangements at his office in the district. A 303 rifle and at least 30 live cartridges were also laid down before police by the Maoist during his surrender.

Police said Digambar who joined the Maoist organisation after getting influenced by Madhav, a Divisional Committee Member (DCM) long back in 2013 was promoted as a cadre Maoist after a continuous service as a militia member for six months. He was involved in Sarpanch Dhanu Khilla murder case of Ramaguda in Chitrakonda cut-off area in May last year, they added.

After the surrender, Digambar said he took the decision after coming across the immoral activities of the top Maoist cadres in the state. After seeing a senior cadre Maoist Sudheer raping women in Malkangiri village at the gun point and carrying out killings at his will, he took the final decision, said Digambar.

The surrendered Maoist would be getting lump sum cash, financial assistance to purchase homestead land, financial assistance to construct house, pursue higher studies and undergo vocational training as per the government provision.
