Berhampur: A man was beaten to death by none other than his younger brother over a petty quarrel in Padmapur village under Patapur police limits in Ganjam district on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Natha Mallik.

A verbal duel erupted between Chitra Mallik, son of the deceased and his uncle Uday this morning over uprooting of a spine gourd plant this. As Chitra opposed the removal of the plant from a piece of land owned by his father the accused used foul language at him and later started attacking.

As the deceased tried to save his son, Uday took out a bamboo cudgel and thrashed him brutally. Later Uday’s family members joined him and attacked the victim with bricks and stones in which he turned critical.

Though family members rushed the victim to Digapahandi CHC in critical condition, he died there under treatment.

Patapur Police reached the spot and lodged a case in the incident after getting intimation.

While police suspects land dispute behind the incident the deceased’s son has ruled out it by claiming that the attack was a sudden outburst of anger by his uncle.

A manhunt has been launched to nab the culprits who are absconding since the incident.
