Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patanik greeted the people of the state on the occasion of Makar Sankranti on Sunday.

Patanik took to his Twitter handle and greeted the people both in Odia and English. “May this festival bring joy and prosperity for you and your loved ones,” the CM prayed.

Makar Sankranti (also known as Makara Sankranti or Maghi) refers both to a specific solar day in the Hindu calendar and a Indian festival in reference to deity Surya (sun) that is observed in January every year on this day.

The festival marks the first day of sun’s transit into the Makara (Capricorn), marking the end of the month with the winter solstice and the start of longer days.

On this auspicious occasion, devotees take holy dip in ponds, tanks and rivers and visited temples in early morning seeking gods’ grace. It is generally believed that a ritual bath on Makar Sankranti would wash away their sins.

Besides, they prepare a special dish made with newly harvested rice, sugar, banana, coconut and black pepper and offer it to the gods. Another special dish, ‘Makar Chaula’, is also prepared on the occasion.
