Bhubaneswar: Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy on Tuesday expressed his willingness to become a member of Rajya Sabha from Odisha.

“If given a chance to become a Rajya Sabha member, I am ready to quit the council of ministers,” Maharathy said while speaking to the reporters today.

“The joy of being a member of the Upper House of the Parliament is something special and unique. However, party supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will take the decision,” added the 63 year-old BJD MLA from Pipili in Puri district.

BJD MPs Dilip Tirkey and Ananga Udaya Singh Deo are slated to retire on April 3 this year. Independent MP A. V. Swamy will also retire on the same day.

Notably, Odisha has 10 members in Rajya Sabha. Out of 10 Parliamentarians, 8 belong to BJD,  one from Congress and an Independent candidate.

Winning two Rajya Sabha seats is easy for BJD given the fact that it has 117 legislators out of the total 147 Assembly segments in the state.
