Bhubaneswar: The state ruling BJD’s ‘Mahanadi Suraksha Abhiyan’ will begin from May 16. BJD President and CM Naveen Patnaik will flag off the mega campaign.

The ‘Mahanadi Suraksha Abhiyan’ will begin from Jharsuguda and Bargarh. The campaign will cover 1585 kilometres and culminate at Paradip. This was informed by senior BJD leader and Rajya Sabha MP Prasanna Acharya in a press meet held at BJD party office this evening.

The BJD leader along with other senior party leaders – Debiprasad Mishra, Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, Sanjay Kumar Das Burma and others – alleged that the BJP-led Union government is not expediting the implementation of Mahanadi tribunal only to support the BJP ruled Chhattisgarh government.

Acharya informed that BJD leaders and workers will conduct different programme to make the people of 15 districts, on the bank of Mahanadi river, aware of the circumstances leading to decline in the flow of Mahanadi river water into the state.

During a symposium organised by the ruling BJD on Mahanadi water issue on April 22, Patnaik had alleged that Mahanadi river has dried up in Odisha as both the BJP government at the Centre and in Chhattisgarh have blocked the flow of its water into the state. He had asked his party activists to make the people of the state aware of the fact.

He had also declared that a “Green Mahanadi” drive has been launched in order to undertake plantation of lakhs of trees on both sides of the river.
