Sambalpur: A major fire erupted at the sponge iron plant of the Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited located at Rengali in the district that gutted machinery worth lakhs last night.
The mishap took place late in the night at around 10 PM. Some workers first witnessed flames erupting out of the SMS Unit 1 of the plant and raised an alarm. The plant authorities swung into action and tried to douse the fire, initially. However, vital machinery in the unit worth lakhs got completely reduced to ashes till then.
The flame was brought under control after two hours of Herculean effort by the Rengali Fire Brigade team, which reached the plant getting intimation later in the night.
Rengali Police and plant authorities are examining the exact cause of the fire incident.
