Baragarh: Normal life came to a halt in Barpali town in the district on Wednesday in response to a 12-hour bandh called by the local Bar Association to press its demand for formation of a Sub-division involving areas under Barapali.

The protesters blocked NH 26 connecting Bargarh to Borigumma as well as roads in different part of the town. With vehicular communication coming to a standstill in and outside the town, commuters had a narrowing time reaching their destinations.

Educational institutions, shops and other business establishments remained closed in the town due to the bandh.  Major political parties and other associations also extended support to the down-to-dusk bandh.

“We have only one Sub-division, namely Padmpur, in our district. If Barpali gets a Sub-division status, people of this region will certainly be benefitted,” said an agitating lawyer.

“It has been a long-standing demand of the people from this area for the Sub-division status to Barpali. If the government will not fulfil our demand at the earliest, we will intensify our agitation across the district,” said another lawyer.
