Large ‘Bol Bom’ crowd turns up at Shiva temples across Odisha

Bol bomBhubaneswar: Shiva temples across the state turned into hubs of Kaudias (devotees who pour water on holy Shivlings) marking the last Monday of the holy month of Shravana in the Hindu calendar today. Kaudias were seen making beelines before Lord Shiva’s shrines to offer water brought from holy rivers in pots made of clay or brass or copper.

As a part of the ‘Bol Bom’ practice in Nabarangpur, a group of 25 youths mostly from Chamuriyaguda area in the district were seen performing the ‘Jalabhishek’ of Lord Shiva in a unique manner this morning. The group was seen participating in a march from Indrabati bridge to the Rangamatiguda Shiva temple covering a distance of five kilometres to offer puja there. The march which is commonly known as ‘Danda Bom,’ also witnessed women of the area pouring water on the road as a token of their respect to the Lord. It is believed that Lord Shiva fulfils all wishes of those who choose to perform Jalabhishek in the month of Shravan after taking part in ‘Danda Bom’ in Rangamatiguda.

These youths have been taking part in the ‘Danda Bom’ since last four years, reporta said.

Shiva temples in Jajpur also wore a divine look today with thousands of Kaudias thronging the holy Mahavinayak peetha carrying Bahungi or bamboo made pot carriers with water collected from various rivers and performed Jalalagi. The admistiration had made ample security arrangements for the purpose by setting up barricades to manage the large crowd of devotees queuing up for Jalalagi.  

Shiva temples across Ganjam district remained jam-packed with Kaudias since the morning. Most Kaudias in this coastal district of the State collected water from river Ghodahada and Rushikulya to offer them to the Lord. Women Kaudias in large numbers also took part in the ‘Jalalagi’ in this part of the State on the last Monday of Shravan. Kashi Biswanath Temple of Kamalapur village and Ujjaleswar Temple of Khamarigaon village, in particular, saw big crowds today.
