Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Tuesday resorted to mild lathi-charge to disperse BJP activists who staged a protest march to gherao  Naveen Niwas here to press their demand for a CBI probe into the suicide of Kunduli gang rape victim.

Hundreds of BJP workers including some senior leaders of the party had taken out a huge protest march from the Ram Mandir Chhak to reach Naveen Niwas, the residence of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. During the march, they broke police barricades near Master Canteen Square and tried to move towards Naveen Niwas. However, they were stopped by the police at Sishu Bhawan Chhak, where scuffle between police and the protestors emerged and members  from both side received minor injuries.

Eventually, the police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the protestors at Sishu Bhawan Chhak and detained several saffron leaders including Odisha BJP Vice President Sameer Mohanty, General Secretary Bhrugu Baxipatra, Mahila Morcha President Prabhati Parida and firebrand leader Lekhasri Samantsinghar.

Meanwhile, the saffron party has called for a dawn-to-dusk bandh in the undivided Koraput districts- Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Koraput and Rayagada- tomorrow over the sad demise of the gang rape victim.

Speaking to media persons, Buxipatra told that the saffron party would observe the bandh from 6 AM to 6 PM tomorrow to press  its demand for a CBI probe into the gang rape and death of the minor girl.

On the other hand, hundreds of locals from Kunduli and adjoining areas led by former Congress MP from Nabarangpur Pradeep Majhi staged a road blockade on NH 26 keeping the body of the minor on the road. They demanded immediate ouster of Police DIG and Koraput SP from the district holding them responsible for the suicide.

Notably, 14-year-old tribal girl, who was allegedly gang raped by a group of security personnel on October 10 last year, had committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Mushaguda village in Koraput district on Monday afternoon.
