Killer sloth bear dies of sickness in Nabarangpur

Nabarangpur: The ailing sloth bear which had mauled a Bolero driver to death in Kujaguda village under Kodinga Forest Range in the district yesterday, died under treatment on Friday.

Confirming the death of the bear, Nabarangpur Collector Ajit Kumar Mishra said, the animal died this morning at the Patramunda Nursery where it had been kept for treatment. While the bear was suffering from foot injury, the exact cause of its death would be known after completion of the autopsy, he maintained.

Meanwhile, the district administration has completed all modalities to include the bear attack victim’s family under National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS) and efforts are on to cover them under other schemes like Biju Pucca Ghar Yojana and Madhu Babu Pension Yojana.

The bereaved family is also entitled to get Rs 4 lakh as per the existing government provision for the wild animal attack victims in the state.

The victim identified as Prabhu Bhatra of Papadahandi area took some passengers from Jatabali to Kattamala last afternoon and was returning in his vehicle when the mishap took place. Near a forested area in Kujaguda village the victim made a brief halt and alighted his Mahindra Bolero to attend nature’s call near a pond. While urinating, the sick sloth bear which was cooling off on the banks of the pond attacked and killed him.
