Kalinga TV Impact: Conjoined twins Jaga-Balia’s surgery begins in New Delhi

Pratap Jena at AIIMSNew Delhi: The surgery of famous conjoined twins Jaga and Balia of Milipada village under Phiringia block in Kandhamal district began at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here on Monday.

According to Odisha Health Minister Pratap Jena, as many as 40 doctors, including experts from Japan, are involved in the surgery. The operation will be done in three phases.

Jaga and Balia had left the state on July 13 along with their parents – Pushpanjali Kanhara and Bhuiya Kanhara. A representative of the Kandhamal district administration, National Youth Health Programme Assistant Manager Soumya Samantaray, an Ayush doctor and two volunteers had accompanied them. Since then, the twins were under observation of AIIMS doctors.

Odisha government came forward to help the conjoined twins following repeated reports on the plight of Jaga-Balia aired by Kalinga TV.

Kalinga TV had highlighted their sufferings in November 2016 and then on June 7, 2017 on Kalinga Bandhu programme. Later, other media houses took up the case.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had sanctioned Rs 1 Crore from the CM’s Relief Fund for the surgery on the conjoined twins. Odisha Health Minister Pratap Jena also personally met the twins and their parents during his visit to the National Capital City on July 29.
