Jajpur: Hundreds of tribals gathered at Vir Bhumi  near Champakoila village in the district on Tuesday and observed the Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs’ day) commemorating the death of 14 tribals who were killed during the Kalinga Nagar Police Firing incident in 2006.

Armed with tribal weapons and anti-government placards in their hands, they also held a protest rally from Champakoila village to the Vir Bhumi,  where the mass cremation was held, to mark the 12th anniversary of the barbaric police attack.

Later, they observed a commemorative meeting at the Vir Bhumi followed by praying and offering tributes at the martyrs’ memorial pillar.

The district police have made elaborate security arrangement in the area to avoid any untoward incident. “Two executive magistrates, Two DSPs, five inspectors, ten officers and six platoons of force have been deployed to maintain law and order,” said Additional SP Rajkishore Dora.

On January 2, 2006, hundreds of tribals armed with bows and arrows faced off with some contractors employed by the TATA company while protesting the construction of the compound wall of the company. As the protests intensified, locals clashed with policemen, and an irate mob hacked Constable Gopa Mohanty to death during the incident. As the situation went out of control, police opened fire killing 14 tribals and over hundreds injured.
