Sundergarh: In yet another case of man-animal conflict in the state, a wild jumbo trampled a former sarpanch to death in Harpali village under Kuarmunda block in the district on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Ramaka Oram, ex-sarpanch of Kacharu village.

The mishap took place during an elephant dispersion drive conducted by a group of villagers without the help of forest officials this morning. Ramaka, who was a part of the group, got under the legs of a wild tusker during the effort to drive the herd and got trampled to death on the spot. However, the villagers managed to drive the elephant herd from the village later on.

On being intimated, Kuarmunda Forest Range officials reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem. They also expedited efforts to keep the pachyderm herd away from the village to prevent any further untoward incident from happening.
