Jumbo Attack: 1 tribal woman killed in Cuttack, another hurt in Keonjhar

Cuttack/Keonjhar: In fresh cases of man-animal conflict in the state, a tribal woman was trampled to death and another sustained injury in jumbo attack in separate incidents in Cuttack and Keonjhar districts last night.

In the first incident, one Mina Singh of Charigharia village under Tangi police limits in Cuttack district was killed in the Panchabhaya foothill forests last night. Mina went into the forest to search her goat which had gone missing during grazing earlier in the day when the jumbo struck. Her badly trmapled body was recovered from the forest by his family members this morning.

Tension gripped the village following the incident and the angry villagers blocked the NH-16 keeping the dead body. They demanded suitable compensation to the deceased’s family and immediate eviction of the elephants from the forests located near the village.

However, neither police nor forest officials had reached the spot till the filing of this report.

In a similar incident in Keonjhar district, a wild tusker which had sneaked into the Kasiragaon village under Champua Forest Division last night went on a rampage and damaged several houses. During the attack a woman in one Rabi Munda’s house in the village broke her leg as a wall collapsed and fell on her.

The injured has been admitted to Champua CHC.

The tusker which is believed to have separated from a herd of 23 elephants which was seen under the forest division last night and later went on destroying at least four houses in Barabaria village and one in Tunutuna village.
