New Delhi: Congress leader Jogesh Singh will continue as Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Sundargarh (reserved) constituency in Odisha till Supreme Court’s next order, informed senior advocate Pitambar Acharya.

The apex court on Friday ordered an interim stay on the Orissa High Court verdict which had quashed his election in 2014, Acharya added.

Singh had won the Sundargarh seat, reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST), in the 2014 elections defeating BJD’s Kusum Tete by around 12,500 votes.

However, BJP candidate Sahadev Xaxa, who had secured third position in 2014 polls, moved the High Court seeking declaration of the election of Singh as null and void on the ground that the caste certificate submitted by the Congress MLA was false and mala fide.

On January 30, the Orissa High Court had disqualified Sundergarh MLA Jogesh Kumar Singh from being a Member of Odisha Legislative Assembly over submission of fake caste certificate during 2014 general elections.

Later, the Congress MLA approached the Supreme Court challenging the High Court order.
