Berhampur: Police lodged cases against at least two unidentified youths on Saturday, after a video clip showing them stealing gold necklace from a shop in Dengausta village under Digapahandi police limits in Ganjam district went viral on social media.
The clip which was taken from the CCTV footage of the jewellery shop shows the accused duo asking a salesperson for a gold ornament of 10 gram weight, on the pretext of buying it. Later on, one of the youth could be seen distracting the salesperson by asking for another jewellery of 40 gram weight, while his associate pocketing the previous jewellery.
While no complaint has been lodged so far from the jewellery shop owner’s side in the incident, police took up suo motu case after the clip created a ripple on social media in the district for last couple of days and challenged police’s effectiveness.
An investigation is underway in the case and efforts are on to trace the burglar duo, said police.
