Intense cold wave claims man’s life in Odisha

Daringbadi: Intense cold weather in Odisha has claimed a man’s life in Daringbadi block of Kandhamal district on Tuesday night.

Maluka Malik of Kundupanga village under Kilukupa Panchayat of the block reportedly died due to severe winter conditions over the past week.

The 55 year-old is said to be the first one in the state who died due to cold weather this year. Temperature had dipped to a biting 3 degree Celsius in Daringbadi area, the lowest in the state yesterday night.

Normal life has been badly hit in the bock due to the cold wave condition with locals preferring to stay indoors after sunset. Roads and streets have been wearing a deserted look during evening hours and people are seen huddling around fire to warm themselves.

The mercury continued to plummet in several parts of the state as well. According to the report of the regional Meteorological department, 15 towns recorded temperatures below 10 degree Celsius yesterday.

Phulbani shivered at 3.5 degree Celsius yesterday while temperature dropped by few degrees in major towns with Sundergharh recording 5.5 degree Celsius, Keonjhar 7.4 degree Celsius and Bhawanipatna 7.5 degree Celsius.

Among other places, Angul settled at a minimum of 7.6 degree Celsius, Jharsuguda 7.8 degree Celsius, Hirakud 8.3 degree Celsius, Bolangir and Sonepur at 8.5 degree Celsius, Baripada 8.6 degree Celsius, Sambalpur 8.9 degree Celsius, Dhenkanal and Balasore at 9.3 degree Celsius and Talcher 9.9 degree Celsius.

Likewise, the minimum temperature also dropped to 10.6 degree Celsius in Bhubaneswar while Cuttack recorded 11 degree Celsius.

The minimum temperatures continued to drop further during night hours due to clear sky and cold wave conditions sweeping from north India, said the weather man.
