Bhubaneswar: The state run Odisha Mining Corporation Limited (OMC) will pay a compensation of Rs 2177.95 crore over illegal mining on account of lacking forest and environment clearances, mining outside lease/permitted area and for encroachment beyond the mining area in the state.
According to reports, OMC will pay the compensation on December 29.
Till date, as many as 12 mining companies are said to have paid the 100% penalty which was imposed by the Supreme Court in August this year.
The top court of the country had asked the iron ore miners of Odisha to make the staggered payment of RS 17,576 crore plus compensation on or before December 31, 2017.
The Central Empowered Committee of the Supreme Court had said that 2155.11 lakh tonne of iron and manganese ore were illegally extracted in 10 years from 2000. The Odisha government had approached the Supreme Court over the matter.
Later, the Odisha government, following a SC order had issued demand notices to 152 mining lease holders asking them to pay within this year the full cost of minerals illegally extracted by them.
The Supreme Court on August 2 had imposed a 100 per cent penalty on illegal mining in the state. It had rejected the plea of Centre and SC-appointed Central Empowered Committee that only 30 per cent value of the mineral be recovered from the companies.
