IAF jet crashes in Himachal Pradesh, Pilot killed

Kangra: An Indian Air Force jet crashed on Wednesday killing the pilot at Mehra Palli village of Patta Jatiyan Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh.

The accident took place at 1.21 PM when the MiG-21 fighter aircraft was on a routine sortie.

According to sources, the jet took off from Punjab’s Pathankot Air base. Visuals showed the debris of the aircraft burning at a field.

On being informed, Airforce personnel reached on the spot in two choppers.

Meanwhile, a court of inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.

The MiG-21 BIS is one of the oldest variants of the fighter in service. The Indian Air Force has been the world’s largest operator of the jet, the first variants of which entered service with the air force in the sixties.
