Huge stock of illegal timber seized in Jajpur

Jajpur: Forest officials seized sawn timbers of around 270 cft after conducting raids on two houses located near Katia Square under Mangalpur police limits in the district on Sunday.

A joint team of forest officials from Jajpur and Cuttack divisions along with Vigilance sleuths raided one Sheikh Ibrahim and his brother’s house in the morning after getting a tip-off on their illegal timber business. While the duo managed to escape before the raid, the officials seized non-sal sawn timbers in huge quantity costing over Rs 3 lakh from the spot.

“We conducted the raids after getting an input from the Cuttack Vigilance unit. During the raid non-sal timbers of over 270 cft were seized. The seized timbers include Acacia, Plum, Neem, Chakunda, Mango and Jackfruit,” informed Debendra Kumar Patnaik, Range Officer, Jajpur Raod.

“It is suspected that these timbers have been smuggled from Dhamnagar area in neighbouring Bhadrak district. The Forest Department would try its level best to check illegal timber import from the neighbouring district in the coming days,” he added.

Meanwhile, police have intensified their efforts to nab the absconding mafia duo.
