Bhubaneswar: The Laxmisagar police seized 14 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 5 lakh and Rs 1.27 lakh in cash from Haladipadia slum and arrested a mother-son duo here on Tuesday night.

The woman and her son have been identified as Tulasi Das and Ramesh Das. Both were under the police scanner since last few days and were arrested red-handed last night while selling the contraband.

As per official sources, the brown sugar was brought from Balasore.

With drug peddling fast becoming a lucrative profession in the city, women are being used as drug mules. Many women have been arrested earlier by the Commissionerate Police. In most cases, women and young girls are lured into the trade for earning easy buck. The peddlers use women to trade and create customer base, evading police.

Mostly, the peddling racket originates from Balasore after being smuggled from adjoining West Bengal.
