Gold Bars worth Rs 35 lakh seized at Bhubaneswar Airport, 2 detained

Bhubaneswar: A day after three gold bars and 143 gold rings were seized at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here in Odisha, the officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs recovered as many as 15 gold bars from two passengers at the airport late on Wednesday night.

The market value of the seized gold bars weighing 1143.78 gram have been estimated about Rs 35 lakhs, Customs officials said.

The two passengers who are natives of Punjab, were detained after custom officials conducted a body search and found the 15 metal bars wrapped with black adhesives from their rectum. They arrived in the temple city by an AirAsia flight AK-31 from Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok.

The passengers had hidden the gold bars in their rectum, the officials revealed.

This is the fourth incident of gold bars being seized by the Customs from the BPIA in past six months.
