German woman rape: SC grants conditional bail to ex-DGP’s son Bitti Mohanty

Bhubaneswar, Mar 31: The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Bittihotra Mohanty, son of former DGP Bidya Bhushan Mohanty, in the high profile rape case of a young German tourist in 2006.

The apex court while hearing the bail plea moved by Bitti released him on a Rs 2.5 lakh surety. Besides, it ordered him for monthly appearance at the Cantonment police station during the bail period and to surrender his passport if has any.

“The Supreme Court granted the bail to Biti with 3 conditions. Firstly, he will have to provide a surety bond of Rs 2.5 lakhs, secondly, he has to surrender his passport and thirdly, he has to appear before the local police station (Cantonment Road PS, Cuttack city) every month,” said Biti’s lawyer Sarthak Nayak while speaking to the reporters.

The son of former Home Guard and Fire Services DGP was charged with the raping of a German national in his hotel room in Alwar in Rajasthan on March 21, 2006. He was convicted on April 12, 2006.

While being lodged in a jail in Alwar in Rajasthan, he was released on a 15-day parole on November 20 to see his ailing mother in Cuttack. Though Bitti was to return on December 4, 2006, he went missing and had remained traceless until January 2013. He was finally caught while posing as a probationary officer in the State Bank of Travancore in Kerala. Currently he is lodged in Jaipur Circle Jail in Rajasthan.
