Malkangiri: In a success against illegal drug traders in Malkangiri district, police seized at least 8 quintals of ganja after conducting a raid in Phulapadar forest under Badapadar panchayat and arrested a peddler last night.
The held peddler has been identified as Jagabandhu Khara.
The raid was conducted after Chitrakonda Police got a tip-off on the ganja consignment which had been stored at a secluded place inside the forest late in the night. While a police team which took part in the raid managed to nab Khara from the spot, however one of his aides Anantram Hantal succeeded in giving the cops a slip.
Police said the seized ganja which would cost over Rs 5 Cr had been stored by the peddlers to transport to the neighbouring districts.
On the other hand, the locals have alleged the administration’s negligence in acting against the drug peddlers in the district. Had the administration acted on time the peddlers might not have succeeded in cultivating the ganja in such a large scale, they claimed.
Police have launched a manhunt to nab the absconding peddler and interrogation of the held accused is underway.
