Rayagada: In a major crackdown on ganja cultivators, a joint team of police, excise and Forest Department officials destroyed ganja cultivation on 130 acres in Gunupur sub-division of Rayagada district on Wednesday.

The destroyed ganja crop would worth around Rs 20 Cr.

The action was initiated against the ganja cultivators following a tip-off on the flourishing cannabis farming in the district over past few months. As a part of the crackdown on ganja cultivators which started in the sub-division on November 18 and continued on a regular basis, officials chose farmlands in Gunupur, Gudari, Padmapur, Aradul, Takisingh, Burudi, Narangi, Nidhigudi, and Miranda villages yesterday.

Informing on the action, Gunupur SDPO Ashwini Nayak informed that more such raids would be conducted today and cannabis plants in Putasingh and Ramanaguda blocks of the district would be torched. As both the blocks are Naxal infested, ample arrangement of security forces have been made for the raid, he added.
