Fire dept seals two halls of posh city hotel for violating norms

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Fire Service Department sleuths today sealed two basement halls of a posh city hotel for not adhering to the fire safety norms prescribed under the Odisha Fire Safety and Fire Prevention Rules, 2017.

Informing on the step a Fire Service Department official said the hotel located near NALCO Square was running two conference halls in its basement which is a clear-cut violation of the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (Planning and Building Standards) Regulations, 2008. The BDA regulations allow either parking lot or library at the basement of high rises and running such conference halls are strictly prohibited. In addition, the two conference halls were also operating without any firefighting equipment which had come to the notice of the department during an inspection on February 12.

“The hotels and high rises in the city which have been found running without proper fire safety and prevention measures are being issued notices. Usually we give them a time of 2-3 moths two install those fire safety equipment and seal the buildings if they fail to comply,” said the officials.

Last month, Fire Service Department inspected at least 10 shopping malls in the city and checked their preparedness for fire mishaps. During the inspection eight malls were found running without a full-fledged fire fighting system.
