Bhubaneswar: The Navnirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS) on Wednesday decided to put its agitation on hold till May 5.

The farmers’ body, which has been demanding price, pension and prestige for the farmers, decided to differ its agitation after holding discussion with four MLAs of the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

“We met four BJD MLAs today who assured us to look into the matter. Following which, we decided to put our stir on hold till May 5. However, if the state government fails to fulfill our demands within May 5, we will resume our agitation,” said NKS National Convener Akshay Kumar.

In a bid to press its demands, the farmers’ body had yesterday decided to gherao the state assembly on March 21 (today). Many NKS members had been staging protest at Lower PMG here since March 12.

The agitators have been demanding hike of minimum support price (MSP) for paddy to Rs 5,000 per quintal and pension of Rs 5,000 per month for 36 lakh farmers of the state.
