Elderly woman killed, youth injured in tusker attack in Sambalpur

Sambalpur: An elderly woman was killed and another person sustained injuries after being attacked by a wild tusker which sneaked into Bhabanipali block in Jujumura block in the district last night.

The deceased has been identified as Shakuntala Mirdha (60).

The tusker barged into Shakuntala’s house at around 9.30 PM in the night when she was asleep. The animal pounced on the victim before she could escape and lifted her with its trunk and hurled to the ground. Later it went on damaging at least 5-6 houses in the village during which a youth sustained fracture on his hand.

A critically injured Shakuntala was rushed to the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla after the tusker left the village. She was declared dead by the doctors at the hospital.

Tension gripped the village following the incident as locals claimed that forest officials and district administration were taking no step to check the elephant incursion. They warned to take to the street and gherao the District Collector’s office if the administration makes further delay to tackle the situation.

On the other hand, Sadar Range Officer Guru Shankar Das, who visited the village and took stock of the situation this morning has assured of a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of the deceased and financial assistance to those who have lost their houses in the incident.
