Umerkote: A 75-year-old woman died here in Nabarangpur distict in Odisha on Monday as the 108 ambulance service couldn’t reach her village due to lack of all-weather road connectivity.

According to reports, Ratanabati Harijan of Janiguda village under Umerkote police limits complained of chest pain this morning at around 9 AM following which family members telephoned 108-ambulance service to take her to the Umerkote Hospital, around 3 km away from the village.

However, the ambulance couldn’t reach the village as a canal, which flows along the village road, worsened due to persistent rain.

Left with no other option, the kin of Ratanabati decided to carry her in a cot. After crossing the canal, they arranged an auto rickshaw to take her to the hospital.

Barely few minutes after she reached the hospital, Ratanabati breathed her last.

It is not an isolated case; a number of such cases have been reported in the tribal dominated Nabarangpur district in the recent past when patients had to be carried in bicycles or cots to the nearest health centres as ambulance service couldn’t reach their villages for some reason or other.
