Dharmendra PradhanNew Delhi: To provide more relief to consumers, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has urged all state governments to reduce the VAT on petrol and diesel by five per cent.

Briefing reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday evening, Pradhan said the states are the ultimate beneficiaries of taxes levied on Petrol and Diesel and they should take responsibility, like the central government has done, in the interest of consumers.

“States are the biggest beneficiaries. They get all of the VAT collection: they also get 42 percent of the central excise collections. The amount remaining with the Centre is used to finance centrally sponsored schemes in states,” Pradhan said.

“We urge states to take responsibility just like the centre did, in consumer interest. The Finance Minister will soon be writing to all the states on slashing VAT levied on petrol and diesel,” he added.

The Petroleum Minister said the Centre is committed to protect the interest of farmers and consumers in the country.

“The excise duty on Petrol and Diesel has been reduced by two rupees per litre from today by the Central government, to cushion the impact of rising international prices of crude oil and the resultant hike in retail prices of petrol and diesel”, Pradhan said.
