Angul: A middle-aged man, Ranjan Mahar, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly killing his mother and burying her body in the backyard of his home at Ugi village under Jarpada police limits in the district of Odisha, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Surekha Mahar (68), mother of the accused.
On Tuesday at around 3 PM, Ranjan, a drunkard, asked his mother to give some amount of money that she had received as her old-age pension on the same day. When his mother declined to give money, he started thrashing her mercilessly, sources said adding, “The old lady might have died on the spot.”
However, the incident came to the light in the evening when the villagers found that the accused was burying the body at the backyard of his home without informing anybody of the village.
The villagers suspected the incident and called the police at around 8.30 PM.
Jarpada police immediately reached the spot and seized the charred remains of the body.
Though Ranjan managed to escape from the spot yesterday, he was arrested today and forwarded to the court, police said.
