Sambalpur: Hundreds of locals including women attacked and ransacked the Ainthapali Police Station near here on Friday and set several vital documents to fire protesting the custodial death of a theft accused. A number of policemen were also injured during the attack as angry protesters resorted to stone pelting.

The incident took place soon after angry family members of one Avinash Munda of Bhalupali area who died under police custody last night staged a road blockade before Ainthapali Police Station this morning. While police claimed that the accused committed suicide, family members rejected it by alleging that he had been beaten to death.

After inspecting the body of the victim, his family members claimed that blood stains were found on his face and suspected to be caused by physical torture.

As the news spread, hundreds of villagers rushed to the Ainthapali Police Station this morning and attacked the policemen on duty before vandalizing the police station. Protesters even did not spare the media persons who had reached there to cover the incident and injured them.

Ainthapali Police arrested Munda on Wednesday on charges of stealing mobile phone of a local in the village. However, his hanging body was found from the police station last night.

Meanwhile, Sambalpur SP Sanjeev Arora has ordered a HRPC inquiry into the incident following the guidelines.
