Malkangiri: Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee working president Pradeep Majhi on Friday threatened to protest against Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s visit to the district, if the basic problems of the local people are not solved within the stipulated time.

Addressing a press meet here, former Nabarangpur MP Majhi said, “We have been requesting the State Government to address a few of basic problems of the residents in the district, but in vain. Hence, the District unit of Congress will oppose and protest the visit of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik during the inauguration programme of Gurupriya Bridge.”

“The party will stage dharana before the Distrct Collector’s office from July 9, if our five- point charter of demands is not fulfilled before July 8,” he added.

Congess’ five- point charter of demands include, immediate issuance of caste certificate for over 2000 school-students, who were forced to discontinue their studies as they couldn’t furnish their SC/ST caste certificate in the last academic session; distribute land titles (patta) to the landless people under the Forest Rights Act, 2006; issuance of Land Pass Book for people from Bengali community who have been staying over 50 years in the district etc.

Reacting to Congress leader’s statement, BJD leader and Nabarangpur MP Balabhadra Majhi vehemently criticised Pradeep Majhi and termed it as an attempt of political gimmick.

“People had given a chance to Pradeep Majhi to serve the backward region like Nabarangpur and Malkangiri but he completely failed to deliver his responsibilities. I call upon a challenge- if he can name a single developmental project in our area initiated by him during the UPA II Government, I will quit politics,” said Balabhadra Majhi while talking to Kalinga TV.

“The State Government has constructed the Gurupriya Bridge with its own fund. Who is Pradeep Majhi to stop Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to inaugurate the bridge,” he pointed out.

The Chief Minister is scheduled to visit the district in this month end to inaugurate the 910-metre-long Gurupriya Bridge on the Gurupriya River near Chitrakonda in the district.
