Patnaik also announced a cash prize of Rs 12 lakh for Behera, who brought the laurels to the state and the country.

Representing the country, 17-year-old Behera won a gold medal in the 400 metres race and a silver medal in the 200 metres race at the World Junior Paralympic Championships held in Nottwil, Switzerland recently.

Addressing media persons, Behera said, “I feel proud to represent my country at the global stage. I am grateful to the honourable Chief Minister for this felicitation. It would certainly encourage me to perform better and win more medals for my country in the days ahead.”

Behera would also be felicitated on August 29 on the occasion of National Sports Day, said Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera, who was also present on the occasion.

Incidentally, on her arrival from Switzerland yesterday, Jayanti had expressed her anguish about the fact that the Chief Minister had felicitated and rewarded other normal athletes recently, but she received no help or encouragement from the government.
