Chilika Boat Tragedy: CM announces Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia, rescue operation completes

Berhampur: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday expressed his deep condolences and declared Rs 4 lakh compensation for the kin of each deceased (six) persons who were killed after the boat they were ferrying capsized in Chilika lagoon yesterday afternoon.

Patnaik also ordered for the free medical treatment of the injured persons.

Meanwhile, the rescue operation completed after the firefighters, Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), maritime force, police and fishermen, who were engaged in the task fished out the bodies of the four missing persons this morning.

Bodies of two persons including a minor girl were recovered yesterday. At least 12 others were also rescued alive and were admitted to Balugaon Community Health Centre (CHC) initially. However, one of them was shifted to Bhubaneswar hospital.

The boat in which 18 tourists from Ranapur area of Nayagarh district had gone to celebrate Raja in Kalijai temple, capsized in the middle of the lake while returning to Balugaon, after being hit by strong winds and rain.

On the other hand investigation is on to find out whether the boat had license and any safety measures like life jackets for the tourists.
