Phulbani: Childline staff stopped the marriage of a minor girl just two days before her wedding in Nuasahi village under Khajuripada block in Kandhamal district on Wednesday.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of the Childline rushed to the village and counseled the family members of the girl who was to marry tomorrow and halted the marriage.

“The girl would have attained the marriageable age (18) next month. But she agreed for the marriage after her widow mother and other family members forced her. However, when we counseled, all of them agreed to stop the marriage,” said Kandhamal CDPO Rasmita Karan.

“People have a mindset to marry their daughters off when they get good proposals and due to other issues. However, the child marriage should be stopped completely because it leads to the increase of Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR),” added the CDPO.

Rasmita Karan, meanwhile, claimed that child marriage has been gradually declining in the district as awareness programme have been organised by the Childline staff.
