Child thief beaten in Odisha village

Cuttack: An angry mob thrashed a child thief black and blue while trying to steal a four-month-old baby boy at Laxminarayanpur village under Mahanga block in the district on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Mathura Manik, a resident of Ghusuriamala village under Nikirai police limits of Kendrapara district. The 5-month old baby is the son of Madhusmita Rout and Baikuntha Rout in the village.

According to reports, Manik visited the village in a bicycle this morning. He stopped in front of the residence of Madhusmita Rout and asked her for a glass of drinking water. The alleged thief snatched her baby boy from her lap and tried to run after she came out with a glass of water.

However, Madhusmita raised an alarm following the incident and the kidnapper was caught by the villagers near Bhairab ground of the village. Soon a large number of villagers assembled there and tied the accused to a tree and beat him up.

On getting information about the incident, Mahanga police reached the spot and arrested the accused. The police also seized two mobile phones from his possession.

A case has been registered at Mahanga police station in this connection.
