Durga Idol ImmersionKolkata: In a big jolt to the Mamata Banerjee Government, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday revoked the State Government’s order on  immersion of Goddess Durga idol. It allowed idol immersion till 12 am on all days, including Muḥarram.

The High Court also instructed the police to arrange separate routes for Durga idol immersion and Muharram processions. The state administration has also been asked to ensure necessary arrangements for both puja procession and tazia.

Calcutta High Court told the State government, “You can exercise the power conferred to you. But we cannot permit arbitrary use of power.”

On Wednesday, the court had also noted that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had herself said at a public meeting that Hindus and Muslims lived together in harmony in the state. “Listen to what the head of the state says, not a police officer,” said the court.

Earlier, the State Government had ordered to restrict the immersion of Durga idols till 10 pm on September 30, the day Muharram falls.
