Berhampur: Commuters had a tough time in Ganjam district starting from the morning today, after private bus operators cancelled bus services from Berhampur protesting the shifting of the old bus stand to Haladiapadar area located on the outskirts of the Silk City.

Berhampur bus stand witnessed a chaotic situation as bus passengers from different parts of the state remained stranded there for hours due to the strike which was held without any prior notice.

While over 700 hundred buses registered with Ganjam District Private Bus Operators Association remained off the roads as a part of the strike, buses run by Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) along City Buses continued plying on the roads during the protest and remained as the lone hope for passengers.

While the district administration had earlier conveyed its decision to the private bus operators to shift the old bus stand to the newly constructed modern bus terminus located at Haladiapadar area on the outskirts of the Berhampur city, the date of starting of bus service from the new terminus had been scheduled for July 1. However the private bus owners’ association called for a strike late last night raising infrastructure issues at the new terminus.

“The administration has taken the decision of bus stand shifting in a hurry. The new bus terminus which is around 5 km away from here lacks proper road connectivity as well as infrastructure,” claimed Subash Patnaik, Secretary, Ganjam Private Bus Owners’ Association.

The bus owners’ association is scheduled to hold a talk with the district administration at around 12 noon today on the issue.
