BMC readies strategy for Asian Athletics Championships

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, on Thursday, chalked out a strategy for a cleaner and greener Bhubaneswar, which is set to host the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships in July this year. As part of the project, the Municipal body will be renovating major roads in the city, in addition to Kalinga stadium, the venue for the Games.

The initiatives will include a beautification drive along five major city roads (Sishu Bhawan to Vani Vihar, Sachivalaya Marg to Kalinga Hospital Square, Governor’s House to KIIT Square, Kalpana Square to Gopabandhu Square via Governor’s House Square and Cuttack Road, Museum Square to Samantarapur Square), street-lighting facility, wall painting and beautification of road underpass near city flyovers, plantation drive, setting up smart traffic signalling systems, and beautification of bus stops along the five roads.

Director Sports and Youth Services and BSCL CEO R. Vineel Krishna, BMC Additional Commissioner Manshi Nimbhal and City Engineer Dwaipayan Pattanaik were present at the meeting among other officials.

The Asian Athletics meet, which is set to begin on July 6, will have more than 800 athletes and officials from 45 countries in attendance.
